Step 0) Have a website / webhosting and a product you want to sell
Step 1) Install osCommerce.
Step 2) Customize to fix name/logo.
Step 3) Figure out how you're going to accept money - if you already have a merchant account, contact your bank and ask about online payment gateways.
Step 4) Advertise
Step 5) Profit?

There are lots of ecommerce programs available, many free or inexpensive. You ned to find one that will work for the items you want to sell. How many items are you going to have? how oftne will it be updated? Keeping a web site up to date and current is a much bigger job then you realize. From what I can see on thier wep page, oscommerce does not look like it would display your items very well. I may be wrong. but you have to dicide what you want to have and a general idea what you wish to do with it. Let me know if I can help. Good luck.

you forgot the most important part, to form some sort of corp entity to protect yourself

Good point. LLC = $300 (legalzoom ) + $800 minimum annual tax - probably a good idea if you're trying to do this for real.

keep in mind, if you do it out of state, but your residence is in CA, then you'll still have to pay CA taxes. If out of state, you'll want to do it where regulations is favorable (look to see where all the credit cards company do theirs) - wouldn't be too much concern with costs - it's not that much.
