CORAL GABLES â€" Robert Marve's rocky tenure at the University of Miami continued Thursday with the announcement that the freshman quarterback is suspended for the Hurricanes' Emerald Bowl game against California on Dec. 27.
UM coach Randy Shannon declined to discuss the specifics of Marve's suspension except to say it was because of a violation of team policy.
Eugene Marve, Robert's father and a former NFL linebacker, said his son had been disciplined because he missed several classes this semester.
Robert Marve returned to his home in Tampa and will not accompany his teammates when they depart for San Francisco on Monday.
It's the second time this season Marve has been suspended. He was forced to sit out UM's opener against Charleston Southern based on an October 2007 incident in which he was charged with two misdemeanors after he broke a car mirror then tried to elude police. The charges were later dropped.
Freshman Jacory Harris, who replaced Marve in the season opener, will start against California.
"You're always disappointed when (suspensions) occur," Shannon said. "But our job is to teach him and (Marve will) learn from it. He'll bounce back and we'll keep going."
Speculation regarding Marve's availability for the bowl game has been raging for more than a week, but Shannon said he made the decision Thursday to suspend the quarterback.
There have also been persistent rumors that Marve, who has shared the quarterback job with Harris all season, is considering transferring from UM.
One UM source said last week that Marve was being "shopped around" to other schools.
Asked if his son was contemplating playing elsewhere, Eugene Marve said: "My expectation is that Robert will be at Miami next year."
Regarding his future at UM, Marve told the Associated Press on Thursday that he was "taking all this one thing at a time."
Attempts to reach Marve for further comment were unsuccessful.

Marve, a former Mr. Football at Tampa Plant who was sidelined for the 2007 season after sustaining serious hand injuries in an automobile accident, has had an up-and-down season for the Hurricanes (7-5). He completed 116-of-213 passes for 1,293 yards and nine touchdowns, but threw 13 interceptions. He managed to crack 150 passing yards in only two games.
UM players told reporters Thursday they were instructed not to talk about Marve.
"This is a growing thing," Shannon said in reference to Marve. "He's a freshman. You got to get them guys understanding. It takes time for certain guys."
With Marve out of the picture, Shannon said former Jupiter High quarterback Matt Perrelli and fellow senior walk-on Jake Byrne would serve as backups to Harris in the bowl game.
Perrelli's only collegiate pass came in the 2006 season opener against Florida A&M. Byrne, who is UM's short-snapper on field goals and extra points, has never played a down at quarterback for UM.
Shannon indicated that Perrelli and Byrne would only see action in the bowl game in case of an emergency. Freshmen quarterbacks Cannon Smith and Taylor Cook are redshirting and will not play against California, Shannon said.
