Anyone familiar with Glacier National Park?
I'm thinking about Glacier National Park for a family vacation this year. Our focus will be mild to medium difficulty hiking, probably some fishing and lots of photography. There are several options for lodging within the park but I'm not sure which area puts us in an spot that accommodates what we're after while putting car use to a minimum.

Who's been there recently?

Yes!
I love Glacier... was there last fall for a little while.
The Many Glacier Lodge is my favorite- I'd post pics but the connection here is dreadful... anyways- the lodge is on the edge of the lake and the morning light is beautiful- just walk down to the edge of the water and set up your tripod right there. The mountain to the north of the lodge is a good place to see mountain goats and grizzlies. Elk can often be seen in the meadows along the road leading up to the lodge. Black bear too. Coyotes too. Eagles too. Bighorn sheep too :p
Regardless of where you stay you're going to want to drive the Going To the Sun road from one side of the park to the other- it's one of the most scenic drives in the world. At the top you stand a very good chance of getting close to [normally extremely shy] mountain goats.
Fishing I think will be on the tough side if your main concern is catching- if all you care about is wetting a line in some of the most stunning scenery in the world... the fishing is great there :p
If you decide to head up to Banff and Jasper the Crowsnest and Oldman rivers offer superb fishing (I caught many 18-22 inchers the day I fished the Crowsnest and the Oldman is supposed to be even better). Banff and Jasper are just as awesome as Glacier but the cover a lot more territory. Worth the extra effort in my opinion. Most of the huge elk on my website are from up there.
I could go on and on... love that country
:D

My girlfriend just was there while moving her sister from seattle to madison, they had a great time...though the glaciers have shrunk over the last few years...but it is still a beautiful place with tons of wildlife and scenery..highly recommended!
