Which anti-virus program do you use and how much is the subscription? Norton is 39.99 a year, is there anything cheaper and better?

This is FREE and pretty highly rated. Been using it at home for years and it is a lot less of a CPU load than McAfee

Better is kind of subjective as all are good but some are better at one thing than the other.

Making sure its updated, running several spyware protection programs, using a good firewall and not opening attachments are as important as antivirus.

agreed. the updates are manual but easy to implement and it lets you know when you need to update. virus scan is manual. FREE IS KEY

Ive used avg for years no problems at all. You can set up automatic updating and automatic scans

I agree w/ the avg it is a great program. also trend-micro pc-cillin is a good simple program it cost around $50 a year for 3 computer subscription so if you have multiple computers in the house its good

I use Norton, and also run spy sweeper. What one doesn't get the other usually does...

If you have ever had a virus, a few bucks a year is a small price to pay.

Go into the scheduler - you can schedule both updates and scans to run automatically.

It's a great program. I have it running on all 4 computers at home and run it along with Spybot Search and Destroy.

That's the only one I use - it does auto update and scheduling.

I dig avg also. I run Symantec Client Security at work which is only ok in my opinion, and would never pay for Nortons. AVG won't do it all but for home use, it's great

I use spybot and ad-aware. They are not automatic but I just run a scan every couple of weeks and they work great. I use hijackthis from time to time but if you do not know what you are doing you can goof things up with that program.
