Overflow idea

In my 100 gal tall tank I was wondering if I could add to my filtering capabilities by adding LR rubble in the overflow area and a couple of emerald crabs & snails to keep the algae under control? I thought as long as I don't block my intake this would be a good area to add LR since it is just wasted space. Any problems with this?

You will experience a lot of detritus build up most likely, and unless the overflows are covered you can count on never getting any fish out that lands in there.

I definitely agree that it would make it difficult to remove a fish caught in there, but I can cover it. Would snails (or any other creature) be able to keep the detritus under control?
