Overflow noise help needed

I have a built in overflow in my tank.

My problem is that when the water drains (in the main display) into the overflow, it goes all the way down to the bottom of the tank, making a continuous splashing noise as long as my circulation pump is running. Does anyone know how to fix that? I know that bioballs would fix that problem in a second, but I don't want to have that nitrate problem that comes along with bioballs.

I'm right when I say that bioballs creates nitrates, right? If not let me know.

I guess I can make my own durso...I had been thinking about it beforehand. Does it really work?

Also, about that modification: what is that modification used for? I guess I really don't understand the concept of an extra overflow box.

I got some LR in my sump along with some chaeto. Also, I'm using a filter sock where the display is draining into the sump. That seems to help with bubbles.

I guess I might be able to see more bubbles when I get my light on the main display finally. I need a new 175w se bulb. I was thinking about the Iwasaki 14k. Any recommendations on that as well? That seems like the best light for my application, according to Sanjay's website.
