I was wondering what exactly is the purpose of an Overflow, not only that but is an absolute need for a tank. Personnaly I thought it was an option because of the size of my tank.

With your size tank It is not really necessary. The purpose of an overflow is to skim the surface of the tank and to send this water to a sump, which will provide you with a larger total water volume.
