when using a protien skimmer can you buy a skimmer too big for the gallonage? I wonder because I know I want to go bigger in the future, but really want to pay the dues out in a 75 or 120gal learning the newbee mistakes on the small tank first.

always go bigger, bigger is better when it comes to skimming.

FWIW, smaller tanks usually are harder to care for than larger ones. in large tanks things change slowly, smaller tanks they can change overnight instead in of a matter of a week/weeks in a larger tank.
