Ozone

I've read alot about ozone recently and have been contemplating using it in my system. Most threads and the experts that I have read articles on say that ozone is definitely something to consider.

Does anyone out there use it and can you give me some comments regarding ease of use, water clarity, set-up?

I would really appreciate it...

Thanks,

Rob

I am in no way associated with this LFS in any way so I want to get that away first. I have had some nice conversations with Mark of Reef's Edge about Ozone. You might want to give him a call or stop by.

I have an Ultrazone 200mg unit that I changed the bulb in shortly before I stopped using it if you are interested. $150

If you aren't running through the skimmer and need a reaction chamber I have that as well. $25

Rob, I have use it and I like it, it definitely helps you breakdown some of the organics and therefore make your water crystal clear, I don't think it is a necessity but it does helps. I prefer to use it with a Redox (ORP) controller, I do not to use it with my Skimmer but rather with a reactor. MTC makes a good reactor, Manny (thesaent) also could build you one. I bought an inexpensive ($50) Enalyzone ozone generator from ebay and it works like a charm.

hey Rogger, do you have a pic of your reactor?you have the MTC unit?

its best to run ozone through a seperate reactor, with as much contact time to water as possible.

id recommmend running an air dryer, but id buy or make a large dryer so you dont have to recharge/replace the media as much. i bought one for around 40$ i think and it holds about 1lb of beads lasts me aabout 2 weeks before i need to recharge.

running an air dryer helps the ozonisers productivity and effectiveness.

run the output of air and water from the reactor through carbon to catch any residual ozone. id highly recommend running an orp controller to monitor/control your orp levels. it is way too easy especially with a larger unit, to increase your orp too high and wipe out your entire tank.

shoot for an orp around 375-400. 325-350 if you want to play it safe.

some sps tank users run as high as 450, but its a little borderline if you ask me.

I also like to use ozone. I run it though my skimmer. Make sure you use carbon on both the tank water reentering your system and the gas leaving your skimmer. I have my ozone on a timer now and run it for 1 hour per day. My tank water is much clearer when run.

Would you guys recommend this over using a UV sterilizer?

Bawla- What kind of media does the air drier use and how much does it cost to replace?

i am going with UV over the ozone because i have some concerns about the safety of generating ozone around kids, after reading these articles below I can’t justified it. Will substitute UV and a canister filter with polishing pads of polyfilter, phosban in one chamber and carbon in another. Changed weekly as to prevent a nitrate factory. Kill some pathogens and remove organics.

the air dryer uses silica beads taht absorb moisture and are reusable. you just need to recharge them by drying them out in the oven.

its pretty cheap, i think 1 lb is about 10-15$

if you set ozone up right, there is no health hazards to be concerned with. just make sure 100% of the ozone discharge from the reactor is run through carbon, as well as the effluent coming out.
