Painting Stand

I build a stand for my new tank and now i want to paint it black so that it matches the furniture in the room. I also built a TV stand and painted it black and add an oil based clear coat and it looks amazing, however, when you touch it, still feels like wood. How do you get it to feel like a slick surface like on a dining room table? Do you sand it? Maybe a different finish?

prime, sand, paint, sand, seal, sand and seal one last time.

the paint i used allows me to see the grain, wouldnt priming effect that? What grit paper would you use?
