The only drawback would be that you are limiting the evaporation therefore eliminating the ability of the tank to cool itself. You are also limiting the gas exchange in a high water flow area. Increasing gas exchange can help keep pH in the desired range. If you experience lower than desired pH or higher temps than you are targeting, I'd get rid of it.
If you are using the plex to hold the light over the fuge, you might consider cutting the plex into some 2.5-3" strips to rest the light on thus allowing the air exchange...
