Pectinia Question

Hi all. I just picked up a piece of a green branching pectinia. It does'nt really do well under a lot of light.Do you think it would be ok under 384 watts of PC's near the top... or not? My other tank has the halides and VHO's, but I am kind of cramped for space..and finding it a low spot where it won't get zapped by an LPS might be difficult there.

Anyone keep pectinia? I know it's not the most desired coral..but this one's cool. It grows all twisted with a tye-dyed pattern on it and a really neat growth structure.

Hey Carole.

Pectiniids come from shallow waters, so it seems strange it wouldn't do well under intense lighting, unless it came from a less well-lit tank and hasn't adjusted ,perhaps. They can also be very agressive,so, I'd think the LPS would be in just as much trouble ;)

Which tank has the PC only? With either the 65g or 75g, it sounds like enough lighting.

Most I have seen have been a bit more on the bland side, but some have really neat growth patterns, and some do still have interesting coloration.

Do you have a photo of your specimen? :)

No pics yet..I just got it yesterday. This one does'nt grow in the spiny cup form as some do. It grows straight up in a twisted branching form, and is an intense green with dark colored patterns. I looked it up a little while ago and it said medium light and flow, so I think it will be ok. It is in the 65 w/ new power compacts,at the top of the rockwork. I can always move it if I have to. I just have to make sure the puffer does'nt decide it's a great spot to sharpen his beak.:D

I got a piece from the Monterey Bay Aquarium a few years back and it's done fine in the lower-light part of the tank, off to the side of the MH bulbs. As a diver, I've seen Pectinia in the Philippines as deep as 80 feet.

If you ever notice recession and think it is gonna kack take it out of the tank as it will reek havoc on your other corals.
