what is making it upset? i've never had a puffer - but wouldn't seeing an angry or stressed animal not be a good thing? Do they just do that every once in a while like some fish yawn?
whatever the case, it looks neat!
BTW, it looks like you have a bit of cyano or dino bloom there on your substrate (not knocking your reef-keeping skills or anything - I'm battling it a bit ATM myself). Most folks suggest you decrease your photoperiod, cut down on feeding, put flow on it (a powerhead or two angled at the front glass towards bottom of the tank can push a LOT of detritus back into the water column so that it won't accumulate)
When I had my 55g, I'd do a weekly 5gallon water change - I'd siphon my substrate - and that seemed to help out A LOT.

I have read that some puffers actually practice puffing up. It also states that they do it when they become frightend. Some need a burping processes, but I don't think I would do what it suggests.

I guess that is what I get for buying the cheapo rock. That is in the 55 gallon FOWLR tank. I have a power head pointing towards the Live rock, should I turn it to point to the glass?

Decrease photoperiod, whats that mean?

My Dogface had only puffed up once that I had noticed in 2-3 years, and I was just walking in the room as he was deflating, so I actually didn't get to see what happened.

He did puff up last weekend after jumping out of the tank - that was a scary scene. He's fine now though.

Anyway, I don't think your LR would cause the puffing to happen.

You could check your water levels to see if anything might be ary there.

Nobody is picking on the puffer to aggravate him?

It could be that something just spooked your puffer, and he overreacted.

How long did he stay puffed up? Has it only happened this one time, or is it something he's been doing regularly?

Decreasing the photoperiod would be not leaving your lights on as long. That would help curb algae issues.
