Pencil urchin

So my pencil urchin's spines are starting to turn white. I was thinking it was because of salinity but the salinity is going up and they are still turning white. It looks as though the tips have been burned with a lighter, now and it is starting to travel down the spines. Any ideas?

Pencil urchins are very sensitive to salinity and overall water parameters and will show it !:furious: I got two small and one big( form a happy go lucky lfs) but when they started moving down the whole place they got a tank of their own. I have had them change color and loose all their spines. Mostly because of specific gravity and Ph fluxes.
They are survivors to say the least!

Is Pencil Urchins reef safe? I saw it in my LFS and was very tempted to get??

no, pencils will eat coral.
