People Eaters?

There are so many "people eater" palys/zoanthids.
Can anyone explain where the same came from and what they have in common?

I remember the old sold Purple People Eaters by Sheb Wooley.
Does it have anything to do with that?

Just curious?

Its all in the name my friend. Marketing and creating a want in he hobby are definitly at play. If you throw people eater or hornet in the name you recieve a license in the mail which allows you to charge people exorbenent amounts of money.

Although I believe Scuba Guy Ron is right on there does seem to be a common Trait or two of all "People Eaters"

1. The Green slit mouth
2. They are Palys and not Zoas

Other than that its Anything goes. Oh ya most of them have Acronyms ie. "RPhPE" Whatever!

just do a litte online shopping and you are sure to come across a zoanthid sp named a people eater as you would also come across a misnamed hornet.

here is a quick hornet misrefrence with a 2 min search on google for zoas for sale This one is named "Purple Hornet Zoos next generation." all i am saying here is that it is a common occurance for zoas to be mislabled.

Yeah I guess people will mislabel stuff for profit, but what I was reffering to is what we as the hobbist (with nothing to gain) would call a PE polyp and use the name for identification.
If some says they have a OPE, RPE, PPE, etc, I would expect certain things.
As already mentioned, green slit for a mouth and the stripes on the outside of the polyp when closed up are pretty good indications the polyp is a PE.

And to the OP, I believe it was Blane Purun who came up with the name back in 02
( give or take a year)
