Pet Mart stocked up on Coral

I was in Pet Mart today and they got a shipment in of Red Sea stuff along with some coral. Looked like some nice pieces of SPS and really big elegant corals. Didnt get a chance to see how much they would be. The SPS looked like blue tip acro and some stylopora. Also... whats the deal with that new place around Bearss and Livingston? Could not find it today.

Elegance corals always die. A good LFS will either not sell it or quarantine it for 4-5 months to make sure they don’t sell something that will die

HotReeferSRT4,

Thanks for the update. I was in FAOIS the other day and he had just got in a huge shipment of real nice Acros as well. I think it was mostly aquacultured frag/colonies. Real nice pieces.
Are the Acro's at Pet Mart wild colonies? I also agree with Pelagic on the elegence. These are very difficult to keep long term. FAOIS has had some in his refugium type holding tank for a while and they have stayed pretty healthy. I hope Pet Mart has them in a similar system.
Several years ago I bought a couple of Pet Mart's wild colonies that had just came in and I could never get them to keep their colors, whereas the aquacultered corals I have gotten from FAOIS have always turned out real nice as they grew.

Are they holding them in a tank before they sell them to make sure there healthy???, or are they just selling them as soon as they got it????

Can I use my WOM card and get the 40 percent off? Or is that only for living livestock?

Petmart never holds there corals. They take them right out of the boxes, float the bags and put them in the tank to sell. Im not even sure they acclimate them before putting them in the tank. I have never witnessed them acclimating and i have been there several times when they are unpacking their shipment. The 40% is on all livestock as far as i know....fish, coral, etc...

you should be able to tell if they are aquacultured or not...if they are on a base they are, if not well....this is usually the case but not always

HotReefer---We wanna know about that. do they have a holding system that they use to MAKE sure thier healthy before they sell it to a customer?????????

pmik25 This is interesting, something I was unaware of. I’ve bought corals in the Bay area for 13+ years and I didn’t know that some shops used separate holding tanks to validate coral health before displaying them for sale. I’ve witnessed at least three stores unpacking straight to display tanks and figured that was common practice.
Which stores use holding tanks to remove unhealthy corals?

I don't think anybody said anything specific about other stores putting their corals in holding tanks. Most stores do not have the space to do such a practice but employees from Pet Mart have claimed that their livestock is held at a werehouse for a predetermined time before it is placed in display tanks at each store. I have personally seen shipments come in to the stores right from the airport so this previously mentioned practice regarding the werehouse may not be something that is done for all livestock.
I do know that many of the reputable stores in the area do treat the corals for pests before putting them in the display tank and generally drip accimilate the corals. Does Pet Mart do this as well on all of their livestock? From what I have seen, no.

triggerfish1976 Thanks for the clarification. Didn’t realize Pet Mart made that claim. I don’t believe it’s their practice to place corals in holding tanks. But, I have bought quite a few corals from them over the years and never had a fatality.

Thats some crazy covert operations you got going down, my friend.

I know the pets-marts around me do, in fact, get their stock from local private wholesalers. So I suppose it is in a "holding tank" before it goes to the stores, but the petsmarts certainly dont own them. Not that I am defending that system by any means.

For my acclimation knowledge I once asked the guy who was supposedly in charge of the Saltwater fish dept what theyre temp/salinity was kept at. Of course, he had no idea.

PetSmart and PetMart are two different stores with diffent owners. Personally, I trust PetSmart over PetMart, after hearing the people on this board. You don't have to worry, being from Chicago(my old stomping grounds), because PetMart is a chain in FL only.:)

Just trying to clarify...

just for clarification purposes, I for sure know that at one time, not sure if they still practice this, Petmart would tranship enough livestock that they could fill their tanks at both stores and the tanks in the warehouse...to answer your question they do keep fish at the warehouse and they do "quaratine" some fish...not sure to what extent they practice this, but I just thought I would throw my two cents out there.

PMIKE... go ask nick if they hold their stuff in holding tanks before they display them. I'm sure he would love to give you an answer. Yeah, I know of quite a few stores that just unload their stuff straight into their tanks and sell em right off the bat.
TRIGGERFISH... I see Pet Mart drip acclimating fish and drip acclimating SPS corals. All of the other corals are out so I don't know if it matters or not whether they acclimated correctly or not.
