The common "live rock" most LFS sell and you can also buy online is aragonite based, I do believe. It's a white rock, it starts dissolving and buffering the water around 8.0 or 8.1? It's a slow process, it's not like your rocks will dissolve in a month but they do slowly but surely help keep the water buffered and easier to keep your pH up.
