Phosphate media

Has anyone had better results with one product versus another when using a phosphate remover? I now am using a Phos ban Reactor 150 and would like to use the mostefficient product.

Phosban, Phosguard, Phoszorb, phospure and many others.

Anyone's thoughts?

Rowaphos from custom aquatics.I use it with my small reactor from two little fishies and has eliminated hair algae from my tank.

I am interested in using a phosphate reactor, but I am not sure I understand how it works. If I buy the Phos ban Reactor 150, I will also need to buy a power head? What type of power head do I buy and how large (gph)? I can't find a place online that explains this. Ok...and then how does the "phosphate media" work? Just fill up the canister? On average, how long before the media should be replaced? Anyone willing to explain all the details of this process for a dummy like me?? :-) Thanks!

I plumbed mine into the return to the tank as It only needs 70-100 GPH they include a vlave which allows you to adjust the flowrate. You want the material you use to vibrate. Not tumble because this will break it down and be released into the tank. You only fill the reactor about halfway and you dhould get a PO test kit to check when the material needs to be replaced. Seachem makes a product (Sea Gel) the has Carbon and PhosGuard mixed together. A lot of people use this.

unclemuskie: How bad was your HA and how long did it take to die off? Does it just disintegrate or fall off in clumps and get stuck in PHs?

Thanks!

Turned all my corals white, didn't like it. I run purigen in the reactor now...

the hair algae just went away.I talked to the manufaturer at Rowa.USA and he said a 250 ml bag should last about 3-4 months initially then that same amount should last about a year.for my setup.I love it and the results were great for me.just keep checking your output water to see if yours is exhausted.

Didn't someone publish some data a while back showing that Phosban was just as effective as RowaPhos, at a much lower price?

There are a few out there now. I beleive that rowaphos and the much much cheaper Pura Phoslock are both (wet) ferric hydroxide, while the Phosban and the much cheaper oceans blend are (dry) ferric oxide. I am not 100% certain on this so take it for what its worth...

I recommend phosguard. Not a small particle media so it won't leak into your system and in 2 days my tank went from 1.0 phosphates to 0. Cleaned out the rocks and haven't seen hair algae since.

The Phosban stuff and the Oceans Blend are dry. I had problems with the reactor (old model) leaching the stuff into the sump, and I had problems with corals turning white though.

I trash the purigen after 3 months and just buy new. But when this batch runs out I'm not sure what I'll do. I might ditch the reactor thing altogether. Or maybe not. Can't decide. But I don't plan on the ferric oxide stuff anymore. Other ways to deal with phosphates IMHO.

Phosguard is aluminum based and the aluminum WILL leach into the water. That is why the ferric oxide/hydroxide(s) have entered the hobby.
