Picasso Clownfish

I've decided that I'm going to purchase a pair of Picasso clowns as my first fish. The problem is that I don't know where to buy them. My LFS has one pair of Semi Picasso, but I was leaning more towards grade A. The pair they have a nice looking but I want a little different of a strip configuration. I figure if I'm going to do it, I might as well do it right.

I would really like to see the fish first before dropping a lot of money on them. I'm assuming there isn't place online that sells them and will take a picture of the fish do I can see them first?

theere are a good number of breeders out there, som have detailed pics of each fish for sale, a little research online and you'll find plenty.
also check the for sale sections of the major reef forums.

one i know of for sure that has some now is ibluewater, they have a wild caught pair and captive bred pair of picassos that are beautiful...ibluewater.com Email bob he respinds very quickly to email

I just found alphacorals and I love the videos they have. Too bad they dont have any bonded pairs. Could you just buy two clowns and throw them together with them killing each other? My wife likes the Picasso and I like the Snowflake. Will one of each work together?

I was thinking of QT in a 20 which wouldn't give hem any room to run and hide if things got bad.

I was also considering no QT for them since I have no coral and they will be the first fish. Also after reading some posts from Paul and some others, I'm not 100% sold on the QT because of the additional stress. But that's probably for another thread.

Divers Den on Live Aquaria often has pairs of clownfish for sale, anything from ocellaris clowns to any of the fancy clowns, including picassos.

Yeah the fish Alphacorals sells are still young so you can just get 2 and put them together and they will work out who is male and who is female.

Picassos are perculas while snowflakes are ocellaris. One of each has a good chance of working even though they are a different species.

To my understanding Picasso is a percula and snowflake is an ocellaris. They are known to spawn together, so they would probably be ok together in the tank assuming you got them young enough.

LOL, I told myself that same statement when I first started... some people don't QT... I'll be fine! The first fish didn't have ich... I'll be fine with a 2nd, 3rd, 4th... wipe... After wiping out my tank twice, I QT everything... lost some of my favorite fish!

The whole reason behind a QT tank is it's easier to treat and observe the fish. If they do have ich, you'll have to treat the tank with hypo or copper, both which will kill all inverts like copepods, amphipods which are a natural and healthy thing for a tank. Also if you treat with copper, it can leach into your system making it impossible to keep inverts and corals in your tank. And chances are you'll probably want one of those nice bta's one day.

The do have a few pair on Divers Den, but no Snowflakes. Although my wife really likes the Picasso so maybe I'll go that route. There is a huge difference between the price depending on the stripe pattern on the Picassos!

I do like the Domino Clowns. I've never seen them before!

I wonder why it says the Picasso clowns are Semi-Agressive?

usually if you buy 2 small clownfish they will pair up, No problems mixing snowflake and picasso, same breed of fish, just different markings
All clownfish should be marked semi-aggressive to aggressive, especially when they get paired and pick a spot in the tank as their home

I think I'm going to buy this Snowflake they have at AlphaCorals. Should I just go with this one for right now and then add a smaller one after this one has cleared QT? The website says it's a larger, female. I also really like this one listed as a Black Ice which they say is a smaller and male.

I'm just afraid of putting two clowns together that aren't bonded into a 20g QT and having them fight and something happen. Especially when you're dealing with $300 in fish. I wouldn't have any option but to move one to the DT un-quarantined if that were to happen.

Unless they always get along right out of the gate? I just don't want to have a big mess on my hands. The problem is that there really aren't any bonded pairs out there that I can find.

I never thought of asking that. Awesome idea. I have no problem putting down a deposit. Thanks BlueFyre!!!

EDIT-> Have you ever purchased anything from them? I'm always a little cautious of a website that doesn't have a verifiable address or phone number. They don't list either on their site.

I've purchased from them twice and have been very happy. Use the contact link on the website to get ahold of Kris.

Excellent. Thanks BlueFyre! I just sent him an email about the possibility of bonding them prior to shipment. I'll let you know how things pan out.
