I picked up a Melanurus wrasse yesterday.. He looked fat and healthy.. Very active in the fish store.. Brought him home and yes I set up a QT this time! 29 gallon QT.

By the evening he was barely swimming, almost floating a little. I thought maybe he had a long day and was getting ready to sleep although I haven't seen a fish sleep like that before..

This morning he still alive but not nearly as active.

My basic question is, in a situation where the fish swims sideways or barely swims, Is this a sign that he's doomed or is there a chance he could make pull through this? I have a 48 hour guarantee on the fish so 1 more day...

No signs of ich or any parasites yet.

Interesting! He's actively swimming again.. Maybe was just in shock from the transfer... We'll see.. crossing my fingers.

I think he was just stressed going to a new home. My Melanurus and Yellow Coris Wrasses went in the sand for 2 days before they can out swimming and getting use to their new environment.

OP you did put some substrate in there for him to go into?

No substrate in my QT. I know they like sand to hide in but hopefully he is clean and I can put him in the DT in a few weeks.

Sounds like he's trying to bury himself (in spite of having no substrate). Which is normal melanurus wrasse behavior. Some times I think the word wrasse is some strange alien slang for drama queen.

Its not just to hide in.....its where they go sleep....he needs a bowl of substrate ...that'll be why he's all weird

Does yours eat nori? I tried frozen mysis but he didnt seem to care about it at the moment.. he seems to be doing better so might eat it tomorrow. Do wrasse eat nori?

Yes, I have seen some eat it and I have seen some just rip it to treads (not eating)

Nice, he is finally eating some brine shrimp. He wasn't really interested at first but eventually it floats right in front of him and he will eat it.. Almost like he is blind lol.
