Pictures of corals, advice needed

I love not having to use a flash for my fish photos, so so so nice.

Yeah I figured as much. Cropping is why the images are pixelated. Your extra several million pixles are helping you here. My 40D would look worse.

I finally tried out the flash, it did really well. This was taken in a pitch black room, all lights out. I could barely tell where the fish was. I actually manually focused to where I thought it would be and then just adjusted through the focus range as I fired off about 10 shots, and one of them came out awesome. Look at the detail, this camera is just crazy.

I also tried some close up shots of my other less glorious tank inhabitants :)

I would be a bad person if I told you to buy all that expensive stuff thinking you wouldn't see worthy results. =) I am sure you noticed that you can't use that flash with your lens hood attached. Once you buy a "real flash" down the road, it will open up a whole new world to you.

There is a custom function for using auto focus with flash. The flash will "pulse" very quickly giving your focus system the contrast it needs to lock on target. Of course the 24-70 already has much better auto focus capability than most other lenses to begin with. The 50D has slightly different custom function settings than my 40D, so consult your users manual. You should go through every custom function option and figure out what works best for you. If you have any questions I am here of course.

Cool, I'll have to look into that.

So you mention the lens hood... I havent actually used mine yet. Will it really have any effect for the kind of fish shots I'm doing? Or isnt that more for outside with lots of ambient light type shots?

Another Humu picture... I like it because the detail is so good you can actually see each scale on his face.

Same with the goldheart...

And the niger... notice the difference in color, I've been playing around with my flash. I dont really like the way it makes the fish look though, the niger looks very different.

You cant really control that flash very well. Aside from adjusting aperture and ISO you kind of take what you get. Your shots are improving by the day, you seem to be learning the ropes quickly! I stand by my opinion that you have the best fish lens available. Depending on how far away the fish is, the 70-200 f/2.8 is excellent as well. Between the two you either can't get the whole fish in the frame or don't have to crop. They work together like peanut butter and jelly.

High praise ;)

I dont really know what I could have made better on that Humu shot, to me that is just about perfect. It isnt overexposed, all colors are true to life, it has amazing detail... I wish all my photos would turn out that good ;)
