What type of lighting is it that it appears you have mounted on top. I am using the stock lighting that comes on the top.

I've the 175W MH by Odyssea from Aquatraders.com

I wish I took the hood off from the start but wasn't planning on MH at that time. I can't seem to get it off at this point especially with all the stuff and water in the tank I don't want to have a crack. With open top no heat issue and have much more lighting but the down side is I can't have any fish that tends to jump.

i haev the same light, only 36", its not really 175, its only 150, the ballast says 150, and there is no such thing as a 175 DE, im pretty sure

I've the 20" version but I haven't look at the ballast for rating but will take a look tonight.

My only complaint on this light is the 24W X 2 actinic is a bit weak and I'm looking into adding PC light in the front and back. I've those in the hood just have to find a holder for them so I can put on top of the tank.

all you do to remove the stock hood is open it up 90 and slide it forward off the hinges. i have a 24g ap and i removed my stock hood about 4 months later also i removed it to put 2 fans in it when i first set the tank up it comes off easy.
