Pillar coral question

Is Dendrogyra cylindrus (pillar coral) found in the industry? Is it hard to keep in captivity? If it is available where can I get it from. Any info would be appreciated.

Its a caribbean coral I believe, which makes it off-limits to active collection. I personally haven't seen it available.

Elkhorn coral is a wide term, I see it most oftenly applied to a form of Montipora.

While most divers also recognize Elkhorn as A. palmata, it's not that common in the hobby. And frankly, even if it weren't protected, it's the sort of massive coral that IMO isn't a good fit with an aquarium - not colorful, would take years to grow + then would require most of the tank.

As for the SPS/LPS classification - that's a hobby thing. IMO, finding about it's wild habitat would tell you more about how to care for it.

Personally IMO, if it's a protected species, I don't like it associated with this hobby.

Yes I was referring to A. palmata. I was thinking about focusing on carribean species in my new tank.... NM I didnt realize that Dendrogyra cylindrus was protected so I thought that the reason for them being hard to find was that they were difficult to care for. I totally agree with leaving them alone in the wild but I just wanted to see if some of it made its way in to the hobby before it was under protection. About my lps sps question Ive actually seen the coral in the wild but I didnt get close enough to it to really examine it due to strong unpredictable currents, lack of a snorkeling buddy, and a 150 yard swim to shore. I thought it was some sort of galaxy coral not knowing that pillar coral even existed. They look very similar and have long sweepers that are visible during the day. Heres a link to my thread with a pic of it. Thanks for the info. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=944991
