Pinched Mantle on Maxima Clam

Picked up a maxima this Saturday and it seems OK but I've noticed 2 spots where the mantle isn't fully extending over the shell. Is this pinched mantle disease? If so, what should I do about it?

It might just not opening up to full extend. Pinched mantle looks more like a drying leaf that wrinkles and curls at the edges.

How strong are your lights? Maxima Clams require strong lights. On sand there might not be enough light for it(unless you have a very shallow tank or very strong lights), plus Maximas prefer to be on rocks rather than sand.

Bottom of the tank with a flat rock under it. I'm using Radion G4 pros and have two Derasa clams that are always fully open.

I guess I could move the clam up on my rockwork a bit

Attached a picture of when I first brought it home. The lights were a bit stronger then (they are programmed to be stronger in the afternoon.)

Derasas are deeper water clams. So they are better adapted to lower light. Maximas are shallow water clams. For clams, a rule of thumb wood be, bluer the mantle more light it requires. Below is a good guide for clam light requirements.

For me that clam looks healthy. Maybe it is just adjusting. You can try to move it up a bit on a rock and look if it responds positively.

I moved it up to about the halfway point in my tank. A bit more flow but potentially a ton more light.

Do durasa's open up more and have more mantle extension than maxima's? Maybe I'm just used to my durasa and judging the maxima's behavior based on that?

Yeah I think derasas open more in terms of how wide open the shell gets. Maxima shells do not open as wide. In terms of how much the mantle extends outwards, derasas might be slightly more but the way their mantle extend is different, so it is hard to compare.

So at what point do I start to think that this is more than just acclimation issues? I got the clam on Saturday and it seemed to fully extend it's mantle (as seen in the picture).

Sunday seemed less so but it was tank cleaning day so it's entirely possible that it was just irritated, plus I really didn't pay much attention to it until last night when the lights.

Today I've fussed with him and moved him around a lot and he continues to look like the first picture I posted.

How long should I wait before thinking that this might be PM (or something else) and give him a freshwater dip, etc...? A few more days? A week?

That is hard to say, but I would wait at least 1-2 weeks unless the clam is showing clear deterioration. At this point, if the clam is otherwise healthy, like rapidly closing when touched, no gaping, anchoring itself to the rock below etc, and if water parameters are good,I would not worry much. Imo clams look better after they anchor themselves to the rock, which can take several days to several weeks.

Just stop, you know you wanted everyone to see that fine clam..looks great..new clam...awesome..
