pinched mantle

what is the lastest treatment proceedures for trying to help with pinched mantle? I have a new clam and i think (pretty dang sure) that is the ailment...

If you have other clams in the tank make sure to remove them asap so they won't get the pm as well. It might already be too late. Try fw dip once a week or so and see if that helps. For most people the fw dip help for a while and the clam shows the symptoms again. I had 3 clams that had pm but for some reason they just went away after a while.

what makes you think its PM? pics would help and some tank specs would be great. there are many thing that could cause symptoms that look like PM but first lets try to find out if thats what you have before trying any treatments

You know I've been holding this in for quite a while now. I think that PM is probably not near as common as we think. There for a while I would log on and every other day there would be new post. I"VE GOT PM!! or IT SOUNDS LIKE PM TO ME. I think we really need to step back and take a breath. The look of PM is primarily caused by a local irritation. Maybe we ought to have them look at that before doing a FW dip. Just a thought. I had a similar occurence recently and thats exactly what it was. I scrubbed the shell are with a toothbrush (not mine) It took about 4-5 days and its fine. I just think that it shouldn't be the first thing to look at.

I think if your clam have PM it would be very noticeable . It would not look "natural" because the mantle would look folded up. Best way for us to figure out if you have pm is to take a pic and post it here. A lot of people in the clam forum have a good eye for the infection.

well, i held off on the treatment 'til tonight... hoping for responses, and i was going to find a long thread from reef frontiers with barry from clams direct--- but i guess i won't bother, the clam didn't make it:(

Does the infection, or pest critters, whatever it is harming the clam stay in the tank? Can i add another clam? Should i let the tank stay clamless for a while? Will the pest critter die off without a clam to feed it?

Thanks for the responses, i should have caught it quicker i guess... The rest of the tank is doing well. SPS and softies mostly.

parameters for someone who askeds if that helps answer my new questions:

46 gallon bowfront about a year old, 2-4" sand bed, turboflotor multi, hot mag canister w/ no filter material-just carbon, and hang on refugium.
salinity: 1.025
ph: 8.10- 8.22
alk: 10.4
calcium: 400
nitrate-- non detected on cheap aquarium pharm. test kit
RO DI water and thats all i test for

Some ppl have suggested that the protozoan lives off of other tank inhabitants but concentrate on clams more if they are in the tank. I probably wouldn't put any clams in there for a couple weeks just to be sure.
