please help dying brain

Not sure what kind i have exactly. I know it is on a rock and hard not like the soft ones that stay in the sand. But yesterday it got this film over it and started having this stuff come off it or something. And today instead of it being green, like it was before this happened, it is now completely white. Is there anything i can do to save it. Please help.

Is the white hard or soft? I've not seen my brain do this before, but I know some corals will sort of "slough off" a layer of tissue when growing, sort of like molting.

It is still hard. It keeps shedding this stuff off. I dont know what it is though. Some body has said it might be due to low mag levels. Any thoughts on that.

One way to fix it is by doing water changes around 25% every other day, for about 3 times. Then keep up your weekly water changes. You get the water quality in check, it may bounce back. Good Luck with it!

STILL hard? The tissue on brains should be soft.... they are an LPS coral, meaning the have quite a bit of soft tissue over a calcium skeleton... any chance of getting pictures?

i can send a pic to you. I just dont know how to get them on here. They are always to big or something. Yes it is hard and completly white. There are a couople of other unknow lps on the same rock that have also turned white. I could almost watch them doing this before my very eyes last night. I looked last night to see if i was able to see any tenticals come out and i did not see any. I think they have died. If so what so i do with them. Cut them off the rock or what?

Send me pictures via email (sandalscout at gmail dot com) and I'll post them here.

I'd leave them, unless you think you have a parasite or something, LPS can reclaim skeletons and grow back with new life.

well i am no rocket scientist but i am sure they are dead. On the same rock i had some other unknown lps and they also turned white practically over night. Everything else looks good except a kenya tree and i am not sure it is just not going through its normal sulking phase like it does sometimes. I am going to go tonight and have my water tested and will post what i find out on here later. That might help me determine what is the corrective course of action.

Here's the picture:

I do agree, the brain is gone, as are the LPS that surround it. Definetely get your water tested asap, I would initially say that this is not the result of immediate chemical attacks from each other, but it might be.

You also mentioned having some brown on your sand, looks like a diatom bloom to me, how often/how much are you feeding? Do you skim?

okay had the water checked and everything was pretty good. sorry dont remember the numbers exactly. I do remeber that the ph was ver low like 7.2 and the nitrates a little high so i went bought a new chem pure bag and did about a 50% water change. I think i also lost a kenya tree in this process. It is pictured in the back. Either way i went ahead and cut my losses incase it was a parisite on it of some sort. It looked way worse than the pic shows it three hours later. So i hope this works. Thanks for the help. So do i just leave the dead lps in there or try and get them off the rock? What do i do about the diatom bloom?

If I remembered right, this is a newer tank correct? You'll go through that process until it runs itself out of steam. Low PH and Alkaline levels can cause that as well. You need to get it back in level with PH around 8.0 to 8.3 You need to have your essentials around which is a PH and Alkaline Test Kit!!!! You need to check it right now to keep it at a good level. You should do another water change day after tomorrow at 25% then do it again couple days afterwards to get your level in check. Don't throw that LPS skeleton out, they will come back sometime. For example, my Frog Spawn, they got killed when bryopsis took over my tank, now the bryopsis is gone, they're starting to come back from the dead skeleton. Depends from case to case, like my plate, it was covered by bryopsis so bad that I just took it out to dry it off completely. Never given a chance to see if it would come back, not worth it in my case. Let me know how it goes.....

Hey bro! Sorry to here about your brain dying like that. My experience is limited but here it is: When I first got my tank up and going I was dosing purple up everyday for a few weeks until my PH dropped. I had a couple of bird's nest in there that went through the same process of shedding it's exterior down to white calcium.
The AC had helped me assess the problema, but even after water changes and addition of reef builder the corals had already decided they were on there way out. I also had low light at the time which did not help them.
I have also added either reef builder or alk straight crystals to the tank which settled on and burned a couple of my corals including my GSP. The GSP did not open for about two weeks. I learned not to be lazy...
At least our tanks are small enough that rookie mistakes are small.

Yeah i have been dosing pretty heavy with purple up and i think that is what has caused my ph to drop. But i am not sure. I have stopped that dose and am now adding a ph buffer to try and raise it a little at a time. I will be happy when it gets back to about 8.0. I really have to get a new test kit. Any good ideas on ones that get the job done at a reasonable price?

I use red sea test kits for calcium, alk & mg......easy to use, but they are still just a color comparison to a chart. BTW non of them are cheap:mad: but just another required item for saltwater reef tanks.

There was a test kit that i saw at the emerald bay store that was practically a suit case. Dont remember the brand but it was like 70 bucks. I guess i should have not let mine run out and think that the test at the lfs would be sufficient enough

This hobby is tough as far as money goes.. and yet the best advice I have gotten along the same line is to purchase nothing but the best equipment. Anything cheap you buy you will have to replace sooner or later.
PH test ... I my saving my money for a ACjr, etc..

I bought myself a PH meter so I don't have to do those liquid test on that again. Now I need to save up on the other gadget meters....... :)
