LOL, I can assure you that it is not. The picture isn't very clear, but at the centre of it you can actually see a mouth (a small bum at the centre, not the few large bumps). Without a careful look it looks like a mutant shroom with lots of mouth though.
Oh I know! giant cup mushroom but a baby of it maybe. I've seen one that is a mushroom but its tentacles look like knobs from a leather.
Uhh i'd have to go get my book but i think discosoma is higher up on the heirarchy like a class maybe? and then actinodiscus is a family? or suborder.. I forget how all that works they taught it to me in school 10 years ago.
Here's info on the top of the coral tree, but in Eric Bourneman's book Aquarium Corals that I just got he defines them a bit better I just can't think of it off the top of my head http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coral
Btw, I had that no 3 for may be more than 2 years. It stayed that at size and didn't multiply. It might have floated when I first got it and it reattaches, if my memory serves.
Or may be we should just call it number 3 (Dr. Evil has a number 2).
But IMO they can be more colourful, especially the hairy one and the yuma. hopefully I can bring out their colour.
Also any tips to improve their coloration and reproduction will be appreciated. The tank is 4x2x2' with 2x150W MH (10000K) and 2x54W T5 (Aqualight Coral Blue), undetectable nitrate and phosphate.
I'm not sure I know what aqualight coral blue is ... like the typical 03 actinic?
I don't know much about MH but i think your spectrum is good for growing but going up to 20k (more blue light as a result i think? I use just T5s...) will bring out color more
Coral Blue tubes are like ATI's Blue Plus, it's blue in colour and is brighter than the purplish actinic. I'm thinking of switching to 20000K but IME my leather would turn browner as a result of lower intensity. Also 24" is kinda deep for 150W. I'm not sure how would the shroom like it.
