Please help with Ebo heater

I bought two 150 Watt Ebo (formerly Ebo-Jager) heaters for my sump.

They looked like my old Visitherm heaters, so I put them in and turned on the juice.

After 30 minutes, I noticed they WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO BE IMMERSED!

1) For those of us with shallow sumps, how are you supposed to use them? The 150 watt heaters are about a foot long.

2) Why are these dumb things supposed to be so great?

3) How far CAN they stick out of the water? The sensor looks like it's at the very tip of the heating coils (on the end), so I don't see why the top couldn't stick out of the water quite a ways as long as the heating coils are submerged.

4) Do you think they're still o.k. as long as I let them dry out for a bit?

Thanks a lot,

ET

If saltwater got into them, it will eventually corrode any metal inside and possibly cause a short. I suggest you say lesson learned and toss them. Your house and life is worth more than a couple heaters. Actually, consider yourself lucky THIS time that nothing bad happened.

funny thing is, all new ebo jager heaters have the "immersion line" and like many people before, they have immersed the entire heater.

why they put this line on it one never knows. i can say, tons of guys have immersed them and run them immersed, and there have been no issues.

myself included.

right now my ebo is about 1.5" over the immersion line, and i ahve had no problems.

the consensus on RC is that some lawyer had something to say, so as a CYA move (Cover Your A##) this line was placed on the heaters.

fear not, i dont

i used to have my ebo about halfway down in my 24 inch tall tank and no prob except for one time i tried to turn the dial it got stuck, so i busted out the pliers and the top broke off

I switched from Ebo heaters on all but one of my tanks to those fully submersible titanium heaters with the remote control. They are nice and small to fit into a sump and the price is about the same as the Ebo's are.
So far they have been working out very well for me but I have yet to see in the long haul if they last like the Ebo's do.
What I really like about them is that you can adjust the temp. without going into the tank.

I have always run my Ebo/Jager heaters submerged. I don't recommend it.
I had one, that had water in the bottom of the glass tube. It still worked with No shocks. Threw it out anyway.

Ebo heaters are now owned by eheim, and because of the url listing requirements they had to include a submersion line. all eheim did when they bought the rights to them, was change their label. Still the same great quality, nothing changed. I talked with the guys from eheim about this last year, because other companies were using the submersion line as a way to discourage buyers.
