My knowledge of sea fans is very limited as my tank is SPS dominated.. I came across this "little" guy while ordering some new frags and thought id give one a try.. obviously the 4" fan i was execting today is slightly bigger than 4" and is more around 10"... As you can see there really isn't a place for this thing in my tank where it isn't going to shade my sps.. SO my question is, firstly.. What sort of chance am i going to have keeping this beautiful creature alive and also is fragging it into maybe 4 smaller pieces possible? If so i could spread it out into my 3 different tanks in different spots to maybe find it a suitable home.

any help would be MUCH appreciated as i'd like to deal with this thing tonight.

looks like a gorgonia ventalina - awesome coral. if it is gray/purple it is photosynthetic. give it high laminar flow and light and it should do fine. you'll also want the flat plane to be oriented perpendicular to the flow direction. I wouldn't frag it right away.

thank you. thats what i was lookin for.. i hope it makes it. its polyps are out so we'll see

that think is awsome, i would NOT frag it, looks like the best piece in the tank. Needs enough flow to keep algea from growing on it. If the polyps are colored other then brownish it is most likely nonphotosynthetic. Needs food small enough to fit into polyps. i would love to have a piece like that to add to my gorg forest

For sure it is not a Ventalina. The Ventalina fan is much tighter almost mat like and interconnecting. I would guess more along the lines of an Euplexaura species. The advise is the same but Euplexs are way less photsynthetic, if at all. They like to feed on baterium in addition to small meaty foods IME. Get a bottle of Brightwell's bioculture and add it daily. You may want to checkout the Fauna Marin line of foods for that baby. I have seen them feed on cyclopeeze also but they are all most too big for it. They can be kept but it takes effort. Yes it can be fragged, but as stated above I would wait until it settles in.

beautiful! Where did you get it if you dont mind me asking.

aquacon.com Everyone said they had issues with buying from them but my purchase was trouble free.. They had this beauty listed for 19 bucks. i just couldn't pass up the deal

...rude

So since it was taking up entirely too much space it was fragged into 3 large pieces and 3 small pieces... all of them are doing great w/ very good PE.

the website has it listed as a Purple Candleabra Gorgonian

Are you sure theyre the same? I see the one you have listed as purple sea fan and at $50 and I do see the Purple Candleabra Gorgonian but it doesnt look like yours
