Guys,
Was given a beautiful 90 gallon tank with a very large canister filter and protein skimmer. I really want to start a reef tank but worried that the canister will not do the trick. Can I get some opinions please...
thank you in advance
JOE

The canister is completely unnecessary with a reef tank. All necessary filtration will take place from live rock and the skimmer. Do some research on setting up and cycling a reef tank.

Given a tank, as in empty or fully stocked?

If empty, do as hkgar suggested and research on how to properly setup a reef tank(stickies at the top of this forum).

If already stocked, a picture of the setup would help in helping you.

I recommend you spend plenty of time learning/asking questions/reading books,etc... before doing anything else..

And yes.. ditch the canister..

If you like videos for learning (and its certainly a good way to do it) then hit up the BRS 52 weeks of reefing or whatever its called..
Its far superior to the silly newbie sticky learning post mess this site has..

Spend the time to learn now to avoid mistakes in the future..

and remember this.. NOTHING good happens fast in this hobby..

There are only 2 rules of reefing that are important.
1. Do everything slow, yes, even slower than that.
2. Do not forget rule 1
