make a long story short,i had to completly kill all my rock(est.200lbs)because of aiptasia/algae out brake.
Now im doing my last rinse now so tomorrow im going to buy a peice of fully cured LR.been in the tank many years from a local reefer.(18 lbs)
Im only putting back maybe 100-150lbs bake in the tank,to make room for my sps.
here's more info...rock was cleaned with bleach/acid and tons of rinse's.ill make sure ph in the rinse tank is 7 then ill let it sit for maybe 2 more days.
The problem im haveing is sense all my rock is died is it going to be safe for my corals after the rock cycle's.all softies/sps remained in the tank with all the sand.my main concern is the sps(acro's) frags, not sure of all the names being new to sps and i have 2 big monti caps(red and green).i if you need names ill get them posted.also have zoathids too.
How much cured live rock (LBS)do i need to cycle my dead rock to make this transition ok for all my coral.if figured it'll take a month maybe for a full cycle but not sure?
Ill try posting some pics...
thank you :)

this is what it looked like before the acid treament

Make sure you rinsed all dead stuff off. power wash teh rocks if you have to. You might want to try adding small amounts and monitoring parameters just to be safe. if everything seems ok after a few days then add some more.

What kind of acid did you use to clean it? I would be worried the bleach or acid hasnt leeched out of the rock.

Next time just do a fresh water dip/soak for 30 - 40 mins and it will most likely do the same and not kill off the bacteria in your tank. I have taken LR and let it soak in a 5g bucket of just RO water for 30 -40 mins and it kills off worms and aiptasia etc. This might not kill off all the algae, but there are easier ways to control that; Feed less, Shorten light times, snails, fish, etc..

Just my 2cents.

I do wish you and your reef the best though, please keep us informed. God Bless.

thanks alot skipper:)

kraze3 i used muriatic acid and baking soda to nuturalize the acid with a clear rinse in between.

thanx douglas,i was told ro,dry time does always kill aiptasia's.
Its in the final soak (ro/di)rightnow.ill dump and rinse one more time in the morning then check the pH/adjust before dinner.
thanks for the 2 cents,i could use a dime too.:D

Sounds like you took things to the extreme. Aiptasia & algea can be put in check without destroying the live rock. I have had an HA issue & within 3 days, a $20 sea hare mowed it all down.

My guess is that you'll need to re-cure the rock for 4-6 weeks while seeding it from some actual live rock.

rook,it needed it REALLY bad almost huge brake out.im not sad anymore about killing the rock(it looked so nice too)it needed to be done.
trust me i did everything i could before making that decision:smokin:

You might want to get a new trash can and put your rock in there with some fresh saltwater, heater, and a pump. Keep it covered NO LIGHT and do a water change every week for 4-6 weeks. You can add some of your sand (2 cups)and a piece of that live rock you were talking about in there too. That should pretty much get you going without going through cycles in your display.

thanx mevstheworld.
do you think using water out of my display for the water change is a good idea or just make new water?

TTT for a little more help,my head hurts from searching the last couple days.
i dont need comments on why i did it just on the bestway to cycle my dead rock.
its been in the trash can now for 2 days cycling,ph 7.58,SG1.024.Havent check anything but those too at this point.
thank you
