Plumbers epoxy vs.aquastick epoxy

Someone told me that plumbers epoxy would work just as well and reef safely (if thats a word) as aquastick. Anyone have experience with this? can you use it underwater? I picked up some plumbers epoxy for $4 vs. $18 for aquastick (LFS price).

I dunno about about that one nick. I'd wait before useing it and see what others say. Roy's input here would be nice.

I read the inside of the label and it is NOT the same stuff. the plumbers epoxy contains steel, and some chemical that causes cancer in California. Im thinking that stuff is not reef safe. Once it cures it is ok but that takes a few hours, im not leaving my cured LR out of the water for a few hours. Im going to PM the guy that told me it was ok and warn him.

you want "aquamend" you just knead it in your hands for 1-2 minutes and its ready to rock (could be interpreted several ways)

thats not what this stuff is, but i bought it at lowes and didnt see anything else like it in the plumbing area. Any ideas where it might be?

The stuff i bought is Oatey Plumbers Epoxy, nasty stuff.

Lowe's doesn't carry it, only Home Depot.

Yep, and Lowes carries the big 10 gram Loctite Superglue Gel and Home Depot only carries the small tubes. I end up having to go to both places to stock up, I like using the two adhesives together.

Aquamend is definatly what you want to use.

Trottman has used "the other stuff" before with no problems except for it getting very hot when it cures.

thats still a big tube an normal tube is either .10 grams or .14 depending on the brand (i was looking at them tonight when i got my aquamend)

thanks for the info, Nick

regular tiny super glue tubes are only getting about 2 uses each for me and its a huge waste

Go to your local hobby store, and buy Thick CA (Cyanoacrylate). You can get a big bottle of the stuff for a lot cheaper than you'll spend buying the same amount in the nano-tubes.

I used the kind from wallgreens in the hardwear section. it is about 4-5 inches long in an orange package. the stick is green with white fill.

i never read the ingrediants or anything. just kneeded it together and applied underwater. stuff works fine.. just turn your skimmer off for one day.
