plumbing a 29g for a sump

I don't want to drill holes, so I could use additional advice.

Noise level is of concern to me, so I've been researching the Herbie method, but will that work with a tank that isn't drilled?

If not, what would be the quiet route to go?

There is other quiet method without drilling.

A HOB overflow is not overly noisy provided you get a larger one. How much flow are you planning on pushing through or what return pump are you getting?

there is a missing no in my comment above.

There is no other quiet method without drilling. Some are quiet enough with low flow but none are what I would call quiet.

I can't purchase an already drilled tank or I won't have the money left for a sump.

And I am pretty certain I'd break a few tanks trying to drill it myself. I don't use power tools.

OK Sara,

You do have options. Most good local fish shops will drill the tank for you at a small cost. The other option is a small HOB overflow, but you will need to do a few modifications.

1- Put a 90 degree elbow on the overflow intake behind the tank.
2- Extend the pipe at the sump end to make it go past the sump water line.

Search for "silence overflow" under this forum and you will find some very good ideas. I run my 36gl this way and the noise is minimal.
