there is a reason they are only $20 and other bulbs are $65-$100...
I dont know anythign about these bulbs.

But around me, a couple of the LFS are having bulbs shipped over directly from china. Thats where a lot of them are made (XM,hamilton, etc), and we're getting them for $20 each. The reason theyre $60-100 is because you'll pay that much.

There is certainly a markup for brand names, but you usually get what you pay for in this hobby. You only need to look at Sanjay's data to show how big a difference there is between bulbs.

Those bulbs have been around too long to be some great secret IMO, but if you find a brand name bulb with the same internal structure as the plus you might be on to something

I dont think theres any statement that I have found less true in this hobby.

I've seen $300 chinese skimmers that will outskim $700 euroreefs. I've seen $25 halide bulbs that are much better than the $100+ Geismanns, etc. The lab grade calcium hydroxide I use is cents per ppund, commercial Kalk is dollars per lb, and less pure. Maxijets are cheap. EVC ballasts are cheap, and better than pretty much everything out there. The $40 refractometers are just as good as the $200 ones.

I find, that usually when someone is saying "you get what you pay for" theyre trying to justify overpaying for something.

Like I said in my first post, I dont know anything about that bulb specifically. I was just objecting to him broadly saying that if its cheap, its junk.
