Pohnpei Clams Availability

When are these clams available during the season? Are they not available because of demand, strict export laws, Limited collections allowed???

Their colors make them very sought after, wonder why they are not being aqua cultered compared to other clams?

I think they are not available cause they do have problems with them from time to time.

A big importer who is suppose to be a leader in the industry, brought some thousands of Pohnppei clams, apparantly, most of the clams, if not ALL died.

When you have such loss, it makes one think if Pohnpei clams are worth importing, they do have bright colors, but they do get some kinds of virus/bacteria from time to time that also attacks other clams in the system.

Also collection methods of Pohnperi clams are sometimes the issue.

Bottom line: risky.

I got two from Barry awhile back when he had a large shipment in. His have all done well as have the two that I got. He was skeptical about them as well and held them in quarantine for quite awhile before selling them - I don't think he has gotten anymore since his last batch - hopefully the issues from the past are behind us.

I think that many can remember that last winter-spring there were many sick Pohnpei Max in the market, as far as I know they all came from the same source.
Since then I can remember nothing, but very few pohnpei clams.

With everything that I have read about the Pohnpei clams, I am more inclined to get a Turquoise Ultra Maxima. Are these difficult to get?
