polishing safety

I was planning on using a polishing compound called Novus on my tank. the rep from the company said it could be used on the inside of the tank but would have to vigorously cleaned with soap or water afterward or it would be toxic to fish. Doesn't sound overly safe. Does anyone have experience with this (on the tank's inside)?

Many people use Novus compounds to refinish acrylic tanks. Just be sure to clean it out good before refilling it.
