Poll: How often do you do water changes?

I'm curious as to how often everyone does water changes, and how much you change. I've been doing 12G every 2 weeks on my 135G, which has approx. 180G total with sump and refugium. My friend changes 10G a week on his 75G. I'm just curious what everyone else does.

Depends on which tank... But I do a lot higher volume percentage wise... In my 14g Biocube, I do a weekly water change of 5g... In my 24g Aquapod I do a weekly water change of 5g... In my 75g w/ a 30g sump I do a monthly 32g water change... And in my 120g with a 40g sump I do a monthly 32g water change... I only do 5g out of my aquapod because I run a Remora Pro Skimmer on it.... I also have a g3 running on my 75 and a g4 on my 120... But the 75g is heavily stocked so thats why I change the higher volume... I would say it would vary depending on what you stock and what your filtration is, on how much you water change... But remember that success is the greatest measure of how your tank is doing... lol ;)

25-30% weekly on the unskimmed Aquapod, 15% every other week (sometimes weekly) on the big tank.

I do a 12g change on my 75 weekly and I haven't decided what to do on my 58g acan tank. Right now I'm doing a 12g every week on the 58. But I think I will be changing that soon.

I'm glad you started this thread - I have been thinking of changing to a higher volume change every other week. Like maybe 25g on my 75. It will be interesting to see what everyone does.

Right now 50 gallons 1x a month on the 270 but would like to start doing 50 every 2 weeks when I ever find time as it has a 65 gallon sump also so 50 1x a month just isn't enouph. I am embarassed to say on my nano... but its been at least 3.....

Months :(.

I am toying with the idea of taking it down because I neglect it so bad. Funny thing is everything in it is thriving and multiplying like crazy but I would never recomend not doing water changes. Especially in a big tank with lots of money invested. A crash could happen at any time. My PH runs crazy low, I never dose anything and do good to give it a top off every night. Just goes to show there is no 100% right or wrong way to run a tank in this hobby.

So before the tank move I was water chaging ~24g weekly (and I was pretty dang good at keeping up with it). Since the tank move...well it's more like 30-36g every other week (though sometimes it's every week, just no as often).

So yeah...bigger tank...another tang...and less water changing...makes absolutely NO sense at all. But that's life right now.

In essence, never.

The only water that ever gets changed is when things come out of the tank and I replace that water, which equates to maybe a gallon or two every month or so.

I do 20 gallons every 2 weeks on my 120 and 5 gallons on my 29 at the same time. This stretches out to every 3 or 4 weeks later in the semester. I would do water changes every week if I had the time. I notice increased coloration and the corals just seem to be "happier" after a water change....not that they are "unhappy" otherwise but the differences in this hobby get to be quite subtle after a while IMO. Having a 32 gallon Brut trashcan and a Kent float switch have made water changes much easier for me FWIW.

I used to blow my rocks off for about an hour before I'd do a WEEKLY 30G water change (BB TANK) - I use a powerhead on a pvc stick. I put on a new sock to catch as much crunge as possible and I try to vacuum out what settles at the end. I used to do this weekly but it was NOT a good idea. For the last 6 months I've done 30g bi/tri weekly and 5 mins blowing off the rock. Things are doing better... IMO.
