Hi,
I have a female Pom Pom crab in my 65 gallon. She has been in there for 4 months and has been very well behaved. I have 2 ring cowries, a fire shrimp, a long nose shrimp (Leander plumosus), 3 orange hermits and 1 blue legged hermit. All have been in there with the pom pom crab for longer than 3 months. About 4 weeks ago, I added a dove conch and a fighting conch and everything was fine with them as well. Just a few days ago, I happened to look into my tank and saw the fighting conch doing summersaults on the sand bed. I looked more closely and saw the pom pom crab at the location that the conch started flipping out from. I thought that the pom pom had stung it and it was a one time occurrence. The fighting conch calmed down after a minute and went along it's way. Yesterday, I came home to see the conch upside down and the pom pom on top of it picking away at the inside of the shell. I thought the conch was dead for sure but I picked it up and put it high up on the rocks to see. It was still alive and started to come out of the shell again. However, the crab eventually climbed the rocks and attacked the conch again. I moved the conch to some rocks on the other end of the tank and five minutes later the pom pom had found it again. Why is the pom pom continuously going after the conch? How does it know where it is so quickly? Is the conch giving off a "I'm about to die signal"? I put the conch in a specimen container held up by a magfloat (because I couldn't catch the pom pom) and the conch is acting normal and crawling around looking for algae. The pom pom has not gone after the dove conch or the cowries and it knows they are there. What should I do?
The pom pom is pretty large with a leg span of about 1.5 inches and the conch is about 1.25 inchs long. The tank is going fallow for almost 4 weeks now but I feed the acros and I feed the inverts nls pellets every 2nd day (I see the crab get some every time). Thanks for all of the help.
