porcelaine crab

I was looking into getting one for my 55 gallon tank and just wanted to see if they would harm a fire shrimp or any small fish in my tank (most sites say no just double checking)

Thought I'd ask under this thread....

I was also thinking about the strawberry crab....

what is everyones view on those in a friendly reef aquarium and would it get along with a porcelain crab?

are you jut feeding it frozen mysis, becuase I tried that once and he didn't even seem to notice it in the tank...i'm afraid it'll starve

I've had porcelin crabs for many years, great citizens. Mine also take pieces of food from tweezers as I try to hand feed them a couple of times a week to be sure they get enough food. They all live on and around my carpet anemone.

Cool beans, hey just a quick ?

But what would make a good host for a porcelain? I don't have any nems because my lighting is too low but would they take to a leather coral or maybe something simple. Any ideas?

most of them don't need a host. I have the spotted one (maroon and cream?). It makes its way around my rockwork filterfeeding. I don't have any corals in my tank and this guy's survived for 2 months and an overflow which landed all inhabitants in a rubbermaid tub for 4 days then back to the tank. Great critters. I think if it were hosting something though, it'd be more noticeable. I rarely see mine.

As far as filterfeeding only though, I think that's kind of a myth. They're just as opportunistic as anything else. I bought a detrivore kit and was adding the bristle worms to the sand bed and one didn't hit the sandbed and got caught in the current, flew right in front of the crab and the crab grabbed it and proceeded to eat it!

here's a couple of molt pics of mine:

you can see his "exit hatch" in this one:
