pounds of sand for a 125 gallon reef

i am getting a new tank and want to start this one right. it is a 125 gallon All-Glass reef tank, 72 inches long by 18 wide. should i just use one kind of sand or should i use a base sand then smaller grain sand. i was thinking of using CaribSea Aragamax Oolitic Select Reef Sand is this a good choice? how many pounds should i get

it all really depends on what you want to do with the tank and your personal preferance. as far as the grain size goes, at a certain point its what you like and what you want to pay for. the depth will come into play as you decide what you want to put in the tank, do you want to do corals? soft or hard? do you want clams or anemones? in general you would be best off having a good 4 or so inches of sand, some clams like it best if you can bury a flat peice of rock under the sand that they will be able to attach themselves to, sand sifting stars also require lots of sand in order to have enough food or they will slowly starve to death....dont know if any of that will help you, hope so

i currently jave have leathers in my sand...one of my finger leathers is 15 years old now! he buds like crazy. so i was thinking of 3 inches but should i use a thicker base sand or will this make its way to the top of the fine "nice looking" sand

well i dont have much experience in this, my sandbed is a mix but the two sands i mexed are about the same size so its hard to tell...i would guess that at some point it would get mixed and that may not be bad looking....if you have stars or certain snails they would probably mixed it up, also your powerheads will mix the sand...in my tank at least there's always that one spot where they blow the sand out of place...lol
