powder brown tang with ick

I found ick on my powder brown tang. Setup a small tank and got my two clowns out of the main display and tried to catch the tang. have been trying to catch the tang for about 10 days. Came home from work today and the tang had spots all over him and was breathing heavy and moving really slow. I finally was able to catch him and get him in the hospital tank for treatment. Am i too late in treating him or can he pull threw.

Hard to say with the details you provide, but if he is doing very badly it isn't looking good. Is the fish still eating? If so make sure to feed high quality food(nls) soaked in a high quality vitamin(selcon)

I would do a freshwater dip to give some temporary relief and then start treating with cupramine and some form of antibacterial. Do frequent water changes to keep the water quality as high as possible. Just remember to make sure you measure properly for adding more copper and antibacterial to keep the levels right.

I started treating the QT with copper and have been using vitamin c. How long should i do a fresh water dip?
At least 5 min, longer if he's doing well. If you use RO water, be sure to aerate it. I'd skip the antibiotic for now and use methelyne blue in the dip water, its very safe and available anywhere, even Wally World. I just don't trust mixing antibiotics with copper. Do you have a copper test kit that is comparable with the brand of copper you're using? Do you have plans to treat all fish that were in the DT with him?

To late to edit.

If still have fish in the DT, ich will remain there too. Some excellent hobbyists let fish that aren't showing ich just fight it off themselves, and some fish may be able to do this. I personally don't trust this as a solution; not for the fish that are still there, but certainly for the tang when he is returned. Tangs are very susceptible to ich and , as long as fish remain in the tank, he almost will certainly get ich again when he goes back to your DT. the only solution is to let the tank go fishless for at least 6 weeks, 8 is better (IMO). Your tank has ich, not just the tang and all fish should be treated for it.

I do have a copper test kit and i plan on not having any fish in the tank for at least 6 weeks. My three fish are in the QT being treated for ick even though only the tang is showing signs. On a good note when I got home today the tang seems to be much better and is starting to look better too. Hopefully he pulls through.

As long as you keep copper levels in the proper range, he should. Its very common to go through a period where you see very few spots (they aren't the actual parasite) when treating ich. The next generation comes back though. The copper will kill the new ones as soon as they're free swimming. Are all the fish eating well?

Yes the fish did eat as normal. I even soaked the mysis in vitamin c. the tang isnt really swimming around. He is just hanging out. This is my biggest concern since my QT tank is only 10 gallons and I have two small clowns and a tang that is about 4-5 inches long.

A 10 gal will do; maybe not perfect, but its a QT.
