Power heads

Hi, I'm trying to figure out how many power heads I should put in a new tank. What's the rule for gallons per hour turn over?

Thanks, Dave

depends totally on the powerhead you're talking about. for a 90g you could do two vortech mp40w's, 2-4 tunzes, a handful of small koralias, etc.

...And also the inhabitants you want to keep. Are you going to keep any corals? Softies, LPS, SPS? SPS require significantly more flow than softies will tolerate. I'd stick with some Tunzes or Vortechs because you can control the output.

Is this for your 90g?

Again, depends on the inhabitants you want to keep. I have a 120 gallon, with over 6000gph in it (50x) but if you are simply doing soft corals, or FOWL, you could get away with 1200gph, but I think even then you would want more.

I have a 120 with two controllable k-4's and a 800gph return. I had 2 regular koralia 4's with the sure-flow MJ upgrade and it was crazy. I haven't modded the controllable one's as they seem very adequate and the controller makes a nice flow pattern. I am probably going to add one k-2 to pick up a small dead spot. I have some SPS but mostly softies, sea fans, sponges, nems etc.
