I dont think that 1100gph-ish powerheads are of much use on a tank that large... just my opinion. You would have to cluster like 3 of them together to get enough of a stream... and then, yes, other options do come to mind. Heck, I would suggest SEIO superflow 2600s over the Korallias just because they are a more concentrated package like the Tunzes. A single 6100 can do 3000gph... considering the cost of a Korallia 4 is about $50, 6 of them is $300... heck... thats a Tunze 6100 there... youre half way there. IF you wanted to save more, and didnt care so much about the wavemaking/speed controlled Tunzes, then you could go with those streams that are cheaper. A couple 6080s would do the trick.
And they arent the size of lunchboxes... they are actually decent sized, and I dont find them any more obtrusive than those akward looking koralia's. Which looks better: 6 koralias all over the tank, or a stream in each corner?
The MJ mods are a good idea... but noise can be a problem. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you get a noisemaker. Seems to depend on the size of the propeller more than anything.
The cheapest option? Aquaclear 901's still. You can find them for under $50 a pop some places... they may only be rated for 900gph, but thats a centrifugal pump, not a stream style pump. When its all said and done, these pumps move just as much water as a 3000gph stream because its all through a 1" outlet, not a 2" propeller... there is much more velocity which reaches across the tank. My cousin used a couple of these before he got his streams. Sure, they are large (about the same size as a stream), but they are black, and have a protective intake cage so you can bury them in rocks and stuff. But for $100 they will turn your tank into an intercontinental flow.
