prazipro 2nd dose required?

After a lot of research and a separate posting, I've decided to add prazipro to my 150g reef to treat flukes on a yellow tang. I dosed today and was wondering whether a 2nd dosage was required after 5 days. Do I need the 2nd dose and if so, how do I go about it? Just add in the same amount again or do I need to do a water change, run carbon, and the skimmer to remove the initial dose before the second dose? If only one dose is required, how long should I wait before the water change and return of the skimmer?

I'm doing the same thing - I hit them w/ 2nd dose today, 1st was monday. Please keep us posted on your results - I'm treating a coral beauty ...

The problem with praziquantel is that it doesn't affect fluke eggs. So - if your fish have egg-laying flukes like Neobendenia, then you need to carefully space the two treatments so that the first one kills the adult flukes, then their eggs hatch, and the second dose kills those flukes BEFORE they have grown enough to start laying their own eggs. If the timing is wrong, the life cycle isn't broken and the flukes keep going. Livebearing flukes can be killed off with one dose in many cases.

I'm still working on the timing issue myself - some of it is governed by water temperature. My current treatment is to dose with Praziquantel at 0.22 ppm then 10 days later, do a 50% water change and re-dose. 14 days after that, do another 50% water change. Please note - I don't use prazipro, just the pure drug itself and I don't use it in reef tanks, so I cannot give firsthand information about those uses.....

yes i would suggest dosing the tank three times ,each a week apart as you never know the eggs lifespan until hatched and you want to get them all .i use for my wrasses prazi pro and it works great for my purpose to kill parasites internally and externally .

On a separate thread I read that you only need to wait 4-5 days for the second dose. They never mentioned if it was required or a good idea to repeat the dosage. Dosing 3 times over 3 weeks means the skimmer is off for 3 weeks. That seems like a long time to go without it.

Anyone else?

yup you can do whatever you want with it but the directions state"a single teratment of 5 to 7 days is usually sufficient ,repeat as necessary but no more than once every 3 to 5 days " the reason i do it once a week for three weeks is stated above . we dont know exactly how long whichever eggs take to hatch so a three week period seems like a great way to cut off any that are in the egg state and hatch .if your system isnt overloaded like mine is the skimmer wont be an issue and i have very overloaded tanks and have had no problem not skimming for this period of time .just my 2 pennies

I had an issue with some new fish introduced with Marine Flukes diagnosed with a scale scraping. I spoke with Dr. Tim Miller- Morgan at Oregon State. He is a veterinarian specializing in fish medicine. He does not use praziquantel ( prazi-pro ) as labled and I don't remember what dose he said he used but he suggested that I do 4 treatments each 7 days apart if using the recommended dose. I did this and it seemed to work well.

sounds like sound information, we all need to do this to protect out tanks from critters from the deep that we dont want .
