I got three wild clams from my LFS they was still in there shipping bags when i got them, so i just was taking a chance but the price was outstanding they are 5"-6" long after a day they are completely open and spread out no problems at all.
The only thing is i saw that i never saw before some of the mantels are eating or cut out i don't know how this happen but i know the clam was this way when i got them they are mostly blue color , they open up very nice and they are very fast to close up when any fish swims over them. The mantel is not curling up or any thing they just have some parts of it missing.
I will post some pictures of the clams so you can see what i'm talking about.
Do you think is a bacterial infection , a PM disease or it was munch on by something.
The clams came from one of LA warehouse.
Look at this picture at the very front of the clam you can see a piece missing .

i don't know you may be right about the ammonia burn it looks like the mantel is just deteriorating in places.
Any one have any idea what is going on with this Clams ????

Update:
The clams mantel just rotted away at the very front top of the mantel.
Looks like just stop what ever it was, the clam is attache to the rock now and doing ok.
Here a picture of the clam today. any one know what it was?

Did this "rotting" occur in your tank, or prior to you getting them? Its possible the mantles were simply mechanically damaged at collection or handling and are now just healing.

i still think its just a mechanical injury thats healing.
Looks that way is it.
Like jiggy said it may be Ammonia burn also who knows.
They expend so much i think they will make it. They right about 10" under 10K XM 250 watt bulbs.

Update:
All three clams look good, they going to need to grow back some of there mantel that rotted out.
I don't know if they grow there mantel back or not , any one knows?
