Proper Usage of a Grounding Probe?

An aquarium ground probe like this one -

Am I able to plug it into an extension cord and have full benefit - or does it need to be plugged into a wall socket and have the small protruding wire screwed into the fixture?

I moved the tank a bit and now this grounding plug does not reach the tank when plugged into the outlet....plugging it into a 3 prongged extension cord would be no problem.....as long as it works.

It will be fine as long as the extenstion cord is 3 prong and the outlet is grounded.
