Protecting stand?

I'm switching over from 2- 55 gallon tanks to a 72 gallon bow front tank.

My question is about the stand. The one that the 55 gallon tank is on has bucked and swelled from salt and water.

Could I protect the new stand before I set up the system? Polyurethane or something? I'm not a wood worker and not sure what would be best to insure a long lasting stand.

Tim, best bet if you want to keep the wood look would be a spar urethane. I use that on my exterior oak door. Very durable but it smells so use it outside of possible. If your looking to paint it I would use a good oil base paint. Again, it will smell but it is more durable. You can actually get a very nice paint job with no brush marks if you cut the paint. I used a product called Penotrol years ago with great success.

use marine pollyurathane found in any good paint store also oil base so use in well ventilated space a few coats good to go ! do front, back and all of inside of the stand
