Protein Skimmer for 75 Gallon

I'm in the process of building my 75 gallon reef tank and I'm trying to select a good protein skimmer. This is my second tank, I previously had a 55 a couple of years ago but have been out of the hobby for a while (I ran a crappy coralife 65 on that one). My tank will have a 20 gallon sump, and I plan to run a nice variety of corals and several fish (maybe medium stocked).

I am looking at the Reef Octopus NWB-200 as well as the Bubble Magus BM-NAC7, both are around the same price. I've heard great things about the octopus but a lot of people say the pumps go out or they make a lot of noise and I've heard the NAC7 is quieter, plus it has a small footprint and height. What do you think? These are the two main ones but I'm open to other suggestions as well.

Here are links to them:

For 300$ you can get a way better skimmer than both of those. Aquamaxx and sea side aquatics are better by far. Italian pumps beat Chinese pumps and both skimmers you linked run Chinese pumps. The aquamaxx skimmers are hard to obtain right now because they're back ordered but if you can wait a month or so you can get one. Sea side aquatics are available through socaltropicalfish.com and they are the same as bubble magus but they come with sicce pumps. Look into the aquamaxx cone Co-1 and the sea side aquatics cs1, cs6, or es7 (the curve 7 with the sicce pump).

I second the sea side aquatics skimmers. I went with a ES2 rated for 300g and I couldn't be happier. The sea side aquatic skimmers are made by the same company that makes the bubble magus skimmers and their skimmers branded under sea side aquatics are manufactured with higher quality parts/pumps. If you're looking for a small footprint with a nice pump that's quiet then I would look into the CS or ES sereis of skimmers by sea side aquatics. From what their customer service told me the ES series are their newer skimmers that are supposed to be better to an equivalent CS skimmer. So the ES7 is a good place to start IMO as well.

what do you need a skimmer rated that high for on a 75? I went with a aquac remora pro hang on in my 75 and it was almost too much

Most ratings are slightly high and also at a normal bioload not heavy. So if you run a heavy bioload you need to go bigger. I have always seen a general philosophy to have your skimmer rated one step above your tank size to take care of the variables.. Bioload and such.

ES5 is rated for 140g, that would be the minimum size I would personally purchase for a 75g. Depends on the person though, I like to get overkill skimmers when I buy them so when I end upgrading tanks I dont have to continually re purchase equipment such as skimmers.

I think the ES5 would defintely do it's job, being rated for 2x your tank size. If you plan to stock pretty heavy than I would defintely shell out a bit more for the ES7 (that is just my opinion based off owning a ES skimmer and using the gallons it's rated for as a scale). But medium load should be fine with ES5.

Anyone else used socaltropicalfish.com before?

Yes,

also have been to their small shop! Amazing to see all the cool equipment they can cram in there. They also have a separate warehouse they ship out of from what I understand.

They have new ownership and are very responsive IMO. I've dealt with Annette over there and have had no issues. I believe Tom who used to own SC trop is now heading up SSA.

I vote RLSS R6-I.. I had originally owned a vertex omega 150 that uses a sicce pump, and switched to the RLSS R6-I, and it has performed WAY better then the Omega did, and its absolutely silent. I will say when I received my unit the controller malfunctioned, but I bought it from Premium Aquatics and they was quick to get me a new power cord for the controller.. Its been flawless since.
