protein skimmer in a refugium?

hello! i would like to know if this would work or not:

ok, so im turning my wet dry sump into a refugium. gonna put tons of macroalgae, a little live rock and sand. i was wondering, would it be of to put the skimmer in the refugium with the sand? or will the sand mess up the pump for the skimmer. its not a very expensve or elegant skimmer or anything. very simple but it gets the job done.

I wouldnt put a skimmer in the fuge for a few reasons. Sand getting in the pump and killing it is one.

Ya definitely not...if the wet dry does not have 3 compartments (one for input and skimmer, one for fuge, and one for return pump). Then I would just forget the fuge all together, and use it for your skimmer and return pump.

Depends on two factors:
A) Can you keep the skimmer input out of the sand?
B) What is the 'fuge' going to be used for? If it is just for nutrient export via. macroalgae, than there shouldn't be any problem, but if you want to use the fuge to grow microfauna such as pods, then well, it will defeat the purpose because you will just be skimming your microfauna out.

oh ok thanks guys. i thought of a different way to keep the sand completely out of the refugium area. so the water first goes to the skimmer, then the fuge, then the return pump area. is that a better plan if im gonna have micro fauna and macro algae in the fuge?

I am in the same boat as you... I turned the wetdry into a sump as well. Would chaeto be effectie in there? or no?

I would think so. mine has high flow and i have a light on 24/7. thats all the requirements ive heard of and i planne don putting some in to try it out
