Protein Skimmer Question

This could be a dumb question but I just bought a used ASM G1x w/ sedra 3500 pump. The pump runs and fills up the column with water but bubbles are minimal.

I ran it in fresh water to test only.

Is it possible that it didn't bubble very much because it was in fresh water and that I should expect better results in saltwater?

Yes sir thats it. I did the same thing, used fresh water and had nothing for bubbles. Soon as I used salt water all the bubbles came... Good to go..

Same experience here as well, tested in fresh with not much luck then it worked like a champ in my sump with saltwater.

The surface tension of saltwater is much higher and allows for much finer bubbles in saltwater. You'll notice much better performance in saltwater.

and salt water is denser that's why it can be measured in specific gravity.

Plus, doesn't it bubble differently until it breaks in and gets a slime coating.
